Male Pattern Baldness
Hair Loss in Men
Male-pattern baldness is a physical trait inherited from either the mother or father’s side of the family (or both in some cases). There is a common myth that male hair loss is only inherited from the mother’s side, but this is not the case.
Norwood Hair-Loss Scale
It is estimated that 35 million men in the United States are affected by male-pattern baldness or androgenetic alopecia. “Andro” refers to the androgens (testosterone, dihydrotestosterone) necessary to produce male-pattern baldness. “Genetic” refers to the inherited genes necessary for male-pattern baldness to occur.
In men who develop male-pattern baldness, hair loss may begin any time after puberty. Sometimes it doesn’t occur until a man is in his late 30s or 40s. Generally speaking, the percentage of men with androgenetic alopecia increases with age: e.g., a 20 percent in the 20s, to 30 percent in the 30s, and 40 percent in the 40s.
